WHAT IS IT?
Temperament Talk is an 8-week parenting course
designed to be used by a facilitator working with individuals or small groups of parents.
The material draws from the theory that human beings are born with a set of innate traits
which shape our initial reactions to the world around us, and color our development
throughout our lives. The course teaches how to best guide children according to
temperament principles. The appendix includes 85 specific parenting tips and management strategies, cross indexed by trait and by problem.
Research shows that new parents given information
about temperament make fewer unnecessary calls to pediatricians and fewer trips to
emergency rooms than parents without temperament information. Data further indicated
parent's satisfaction with their children increased as they learned about temperament
differences. In field tests of the Temperament Talk curriculum, parents consistently
reported reduced conflict with their children following completion of the course. They
also reported increased pleasurable time spent with their children.
Instructors field testing Temperament Talk
unanimously applauded the enjoyment level of the course, describing it as positive,
supportive of parents, non-blaming and just plain fun to do.
In 1995, staff at the Center for Human Development,
Inc. collaborated to revise and improve the Temperament Program materials and created
TEMPERAMENT TALK. Based on collective experience in parent education, mental health
services and prevention, the curriculum brings temperament theory into practice, providing
simple tools for more effective parenting.
Kathy Goodman, Barb Zukin, Barbara Tyler,
and Lyndall Shick co-authored Temperament Talk. This worktext brings you the best of their
experience working with parents of all kinds of children since 1988. Parents delight in
using information that affirms and expands upon what they already know: kids are all
different ... each child is born a unique individual!
This program helps parents create effective and
uniquely individual ways to shape behavior. Temperament Talk brings humor, love and a new
understanding to the challenging task of child rearing. Understanding the "fit"
between yourself and your child can the be beginning of a new relationship based on
tolerance and respect. Your new relationship can be the foundation for teaching your child
the lessons that lead to success!
